Pada dekade terakhir ini, kemajuan yang dicapai dalam penelitian robot sungguh mengagumkan, tidak hanya mampu membuat tangan robot dengan jari-jari yang terlihat sempurna, bisa bermain musik seperti piano dan guitar. Namun juga kemampuan berdiri dan berjalan layaknya manusia. Tentu kehebatan sistem robot tidak hanya terletak pada perangkat kerasnya tetapi juga perangkat lunak pengendali fungsinya. Kecanggihan perangkat lunak masih sangat terbatasi oleh perkembangan sensor peraba yang memungkinkan robot mampu mendeteksi kondisi sekelilingnya dan melakukan adaptasi melalui umpan balik ke perangkat lunak pengendali.

Buku ini memuat secara garis besar konsep lengan robot berjari yang mampu melakukan berbagai fungsi dan bagaimana pengendalian secara mekanik dilakukan yaitu menyangkut kestabilan dan kerjasama antara bagian.
